Microsoft is gearing up to introduce new networking features into its next beta development milestone of .NET Framework 4.0. The Redmond company confirmed that Network Class Library were scheduled to go live with Beta 2 of .NET 4.0. At this point in time, developers are free to use the first Beta release of .NET Framework 4.0. However, if they are going to take advantage of the additional features promised by the software giant they will have to wait for the second Beta release. No word yet from Microsoft on a definitive delivery deadline for the .NET Framework 4.0 Beta 2.

“A partial summary of the features is: Opening socket connections using the DNS name of the machine; Opening socket connections for IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously; Using SSL for authentication only; Setting 64-bit values for the HTTP Range header; Setting the Date and Host headers on HttpWebRequest; New performance counters for HttpWebRequest; and Supporting escaped characters embedded in URIs,” revealed Nicholas Allen, program manager at Microsoft working on Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Silverlight, and other projects for the .NET Framework.

Microsoft's Aaron Oneal has a more complete and detailed list of the new features that will be introduced with .NET Framework 4.0 Beta 2. Oneal indicated that, on top of the new additions in Beta 2, the software giant had already had to deal with a vast number of bugs. No less than 150 bugs were fixed in the Beta 1 development milestone. Oneal explained that the focus was on: “stability (fix hangs, crashes and improve long-running/data center scenarios such as fix memory leaks); performance; RFC compliance with URI, FTP, HTTP, SMTP; internationalization (better handling of Unicode characters, etc.) in URI, FTP, HTTP, SMTP; IPv6 connectivity; customer reported bugs through our Connect, MSDN Forums, and other channels.”

Allen warned users of WCF not to expect the new networking features to automatically pop up in the Windows Communication Foundation. “Some features aren’t applicable, either because we don’t use the protocol or because an existing WCF feature already solves the problem, but for the most part we’ll be waiting for you to tell us if there’s something important to support to improve your applications. You don’t have to (and shouldn’t) wait for beta 2 to actually be available to start asking,” Allen stated.

Of course that no testing program of Office 2010 would be complete without all the components of the product, and in this regard, Outlook 2010 shipped to testers concomitantly with the preview version of Word 2010, Excel 2010, PowerPoint 2010, etc. Following the release of the Office 2010 Technical Preview, Stephen Griffin, senior escalation engineer in Developer Support for Outlook and Exchange Server APIs and MAPI made available for download the Outlook 2010 Messaging API (MAPI) Code Samples via CodePlex.
Among the additions to MAPI for the next version of Microsoft's email client is “support for 64-bit Microsoft Outlook—Reference topics for applicable API elements have been updated to correspond to new header files that support 64-bit Outlook. These header files are now available as a download at Outlook 2010: MAPI Header Files. If your existing 32-bit MAPI application is going to be running on a 64-bit operating system with 64-bit Outlook installed, you will need to rebuild your 32-bit application as a 64-bit application,” reads an excerpt from the information accompanying the release.

Office 2010 debuted in Technical Preview stage earlier this month. With the new Outlook 2010 Messaging API (MAPI) Code Samples available, developers can start building mail-based applications for the successor of Office Outlook 2007. Microsoft emphasized that the version of the Outlook Messaging API (MAPI) Reference was designed with C and C++ developers in mind. Essentially, the code samples can be leveraged to kick up a notch apps with messaging functionality.

“Fast shutdown support for MAPI clients—MAPI clients can now initiate a quick shutdown and have the MAPI subsystem notify loaded providers to minimize data loss from the fast shutdown. Additional interfaces have been added for the client and provider to support fast shutdown,” Microsoft added. “More properties—Documentation for an additional 38 tagged properties and named properties has been added to this release. Option of linking explicitly to MAPI functions—MAPI developers can now choose to explicitly link to the MAPI stub of the default MAPI client (for example, Msmapi32.dll of Outlook) without going through the MAPI library and the Windows MAPI stub.”

...A more complex overhaul than that of Firefox 3.7
It has already been confirmed that Mozilla is cooking a redesign of the graphical user interface for the next iterations of its open-source browser. Mockups have already been made public for Firefox 3.7 running on top of the Windows operating system. However, Mozilla has now taken it to the next level and unveiled plans for the GUI overhaul of Firefox 4.0. Of course, just as it was the case for Firefox 3.7, the Firefox 4.0 Windows Theme Mockups are nothing more than drafts at this point in time. “These are not final! They are only for brainstorming/exploration,” reads a message accompanying the new designs.

You will be able to get a taste of what Firefox 4.0 might end up looking like via the images included at the bottom of this article. Obviously, the new graphical user interface of Firefox 4.0 is tailored to Windows 7. While with Firefox 3.7 Mozilla was also exploring an overhaul for Windows XP, version 4.0 of the open-source browser is focused on Windows 7.

Mozilla plans to “possibly add a Bookmarks widget as an upfront replacement for the Bookmarks menu/Bookmarks toolbar (option to turn those on would remain).” But also to even change the position of the tabs in relation to the address bar. In this respect, Mozilla is planning an approach to the Firefox 4.0 UI similar to that of Google for Chrome.

“The more contentious Tabs-on-Top concept. Positives: Save Vertical Space; Efficiency/Remove Visual Complexity - Right now the tabs have to be connected to something. So we are adding an extra visual element for them to connect to; Shorter Mouse Distance to Page Controls,” Mozilla noted.

But at the same time, it also enumerated the negative aspects: “Breaks Consistency/Familiarity - Moving things confuses existing users; Title is MIA - With the space removed from the titlebar you only get the truncated version in the tab; Longer Mouse Distance to Tabs - Takes longer to mouse to a tab; Lost Space - Sandwiched in between the application icon and the window widgets you lose some space.”

Mozilla has already debuted work on the successor of Firefox 3.5. Firefox 3.6, codenamed Namoroka is planned for availability later this year. Mozilla revealed an initial, also draft, product roadmap for Firefox, noting that Firefox 3.7 could drop in the first half of 2010. There has been little reference to releases of the open-source browser past version 3.7, certainly no deadline was made public as to when to expect Firefox 4.0.

Mozilla is also planning a Combo Stop/Refresh/Go Button “Attached at the end of the location bar. Turns green when you start typing. Blends with the location bar when at rest. Turns blue on hover. Turns red when a page is loading. The proposed iconography is mostly colorless. Adding color to these temporary action driven buttons will make it more obvious something is going on.”
